History
Intent
Skyswood School delivers a history curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils. The curriculum will nurture historical skills that provide the building blocks of what they need to know to be able to succeed in history. Our history curriculum is coherently planned, for the most part following a chronological order. The children will recognise recurring themes that run through history and use these to make connections in history. The children will learn and develop historical skills as they complete their learning journey. The curriculum has been designed to be both broad and balanced. It teaches topics specific to St Albans such as the War of the Roses, Roman history and the study of Alban himself. There is emphasis on empire, and the curriculum will focus on differences and similarities between Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Mayans. The unit ‘Black and British’ will reinforce the role, influence and importance that ethnic diversity has had throughout British history.
I like history because you can journey back in time
(Anna - Skyswood pupil)
Implementation
All topics will start with reference to chronology and where that era sits on a timeline. Learning will be supported through the use of knowledge organisers, which will be used as working documents and a constant point of reference, allowing the children access to subject–specific knowledge such as key vocabulary, timelines and historical information. Children will become more familiar with source materials and how it can be used as an insight into the past. They will understand that sources can be examined in different ways and they may draw different conclusions. Children should be encouraged to question established ‘facts’ and understand the importance of detail. Each topic will be taught using key questions to spark the children’s interest and encourage historical thinking. Historians do not just answer questions, they pose them too and children will be encouraged to question evidence throughout the course of an enquiry.
A growth mindset helps you to unlock complex questions. History is fascinating because you can approach it from so many angles
(Ibrahim - Skyswood pupil)
Impact
At Skyswood, we believe that a balanced, well-structured and planned curriculum will help develop the students’ historical skills as they progress on their learning journey. Children will be eager to find out more about the topic, will talk freely about what they have learnt, and will use subject specific vocabulary. Through the examination of contemporary sources, children will learn to question the past and draw their own conclusions, being encouraged to question preconceived ideas. History should be accessible for all and should be taught to an age-appropriate standard across all age groups.
History is all about trying to solve mysteries. You need to dig deep
(Thomas - Skyswood pupil)
Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs
Teachers assess prior learning through questioning past topics and draw connections through linking historical themes across the curriculum. Staff have high expectations of all children and adapt the learning appropriately to ensure that it is inviting and accessible to children with special educational needs. History is an engaging subject that inspires and enthuses all pupils. The children will have opportunities to experience history first-hand through school visits and trips, enriching the curriculum and bringing it to life!
