PE
Intent
Through P.E. we aim to foster an engagement and enjoyment of sports, gymnastics, dance, fitness and outdoor adventurous activities for all pupils. We ensure that every child is included and strives to achieve their personal best. We believe that the subject inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in physically demanding activities, helping them to become confident in a way which supports their health and fitness throughout their lives. It is our intention that our children should be physically active every day, whether through P.E. lessons, playtimes lunchtimes or extra-curricular activities, as well as within the classroom setting. We also believe that children should have the opportunity to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as teamwork, fairness and respect. We aim to challenge and motivate pupils to develop their wider skills such as creativity, problem solving, working with others and self-reflection.
I love PE because I love sports and it keeps me fit and active

Implementation
Our curriculum uses the nationally acclaimed Get Set Scheme for P.E. We chose this scheme as it is particularly well structured, ensuring that pupils gain progressive knowledge as well as the physical, technical, social and psychological skills involved in all physical activities. Not only does our teaching of PE help the children to learn new skills, it also cements their previous learning in positive ways and promotes the idea of transferrable skills from one sport to the next. Children gain knowledge about their bodies and the positive effects of regular exercise and fitness. Swimming is introduced in Year 3 and all of our KS2 classes have a term of swimming tuition. Outdoor Adventurous Activities are introduced in Year 4 and these skills are extended when the children are in Year 6.
I really enjoyed our dance unit and it was great to perform at Oaklands College

Impact
By the end of KS2, children leave Skyswood as confident and competent athletes who have a knowledge of their bodies and the importance of exercise. We aim to foster a love of sport and for children to appreciate the wide variety of sports that we offer as well as the ones we don’t. Pupils develop an understanding of how to apply skills effectively for the unit of work they have been learning, with clear progression year-on-year. It is our aspiration that, by the end of KS2, pupils will have high levels of physical literacy and a positive attitude towards physical activity to make informed life choices.
I’ve represented the school at so many sports, the county basketball final and the girls’ football tournament are the two events that I will never forget!

Supporting Pupils with Special Educational Needs
For a fully inclusive P.E. curriculum, teachers at Skyswood Primary and Nursery School develop a sound understanding of their pupils, anticipating any barriers to learning particular activities and considering the most effective ways to adapt activities and make the necessary adjustments for all children to thrive. Sometimes this may be resource related (eg the size, weight and type of ball used for a throwing and catching exercise). It may be a case of adapting times or distances (eg shorter distance between a pupil and a target for a throwing exercise, or a greater length between cones for a dribbling exercise. Our teachers consider ways of minimising or reducing those barriers so that all pupils can fully participate and realise their potential. There may be occasions where pupils with SEND require a ‘parallel’ activity in order to access the same learning objective as their peers but at the appropriate level that ensures personal success.
